Today’s headlines have brought welcome news for millions of households. The Government has announced that VAT will be removed from domestic electricity bills from 1st October 2026, reducing the rate from 5% to 0%. The change is expected to save the average household around £45 per year, and has been introduced as part of a wider effort to ease the cost of living.
Any reduction in household energy bills is good news, particularly after years of rising costs. However, while £45 a year will make a difference for many families, it also highlights something much bigger.
For decades, electricity has often been seen as the expensive way to heat a home, while gas has been viewed as the cheaper option. Today’s announcement is another sign that this balance is beginning to change.
