
Think solar panels only work in sunny parts of the UK? New figures suggest otherwise.
A new analysis reported by The Guardian has highlighted just how effective rooftop solar can be across Britain, including some of the country’s cloudier regions.
According to the analysis, a typical 4kW solar PV system in Manchester could save an average household around £463 per year on electricity costs. In sunnier parts of southern England, estimated savings can rise above £600 per year.
The message is clear: you don’t need a Mediterranean climate to benefit from solar power.
It’s a question we hear regularly. Living in the North West, it is understandable to wonder whether our weather makes solar panels worthwhile. While we may not enjoy the same amount of sunshine as southern Europe, or even southern England, modern solar panels don’t need bright sunshine to generate electricity.
Solar panels generate electricity from daylight, meaning they continue to produce power on cloudy days. The amount they generate will vary depending on the weather, time of year, roof orientation, shading, and the size of the system, but the UK remains a perfectly viable market for solar PV. In fact, the North West has seen strong demand for solar installations as homeowners look for ways to reduce their reliance on electricity from the grid.
The economics of solar have changed significantly in recent years. Electricity prices remain a major household expense, while the cost of installing solar has fallen considerably compared with previous years. At the same time, more homeowners are looking at ways to use their own generated electricity rather than buying as much electricity from the grid.
The latest figures reinforce this trend. Government data shows that nearly 172,000 solar installations have been fitted across the UK since the beginning of 2026, with rooftop solar accounting for more than seven in ten installations during July.
Solar also supplied a record 14.4% of Great Britain’s electricity in July 2026, demonstrating how quickly solar generation is becoming part of the UK’s energy mix.
The important thing to remember is that there isn’t one saving figure that applies to every home. The Guardian’s analysis used a standard 4kW system and assumed that 50% of the electricity generated was used directly by the household. Generation is naturally higher during the longer, brighter days of spring and summer, but your system will continue producing electricity throughout the year.
The key is getting the system design right for your property. A south-facing, unshaded roof will generally produce more electricity than a heavily shaded or north-facing roof.
